Inside Out: Winter Window 2021
During the winter lockdown, we are holding 2 solo shows in the window of One Paved Court. Visitors can view the work on foot and online and arrange a purchase direct with the artist, although the gallery will be closed to the public.

Female Narratives
As well as showing work in the window, Sylvia has also be using One Paved Court as a studio residency, working on a brand new series of portrait paintings of fellow female Londoners, the pandemic edition. Always interested in female narratives, up till now she was mainly focused on aesthetics of absence, expressed through both imagery of anonymous ancestresses and sartorial themed pieces. The new works aim to reflect the familiar contemporary women the way they were in recent months. The concept for the series also had to accommodate for existing restrictions, making it time specific.
As the culmination of her residency, Sylvia has hung the work created over the last few weeks, alongside past works. “My practice is devout to portraits of women, the passers-by from the moment in time. I acknowledge their strength and their glamour. I inquire into the aesthetics of absence, hauntology, and nostalgia. I look at the dress as the memory of the absent. Dresses, that I consider to be ultimately female garments, form their own visual language – the feminine sartorial language that speaks of identity, empowerment, and allure. In the absence of the wearer, the dress speaks of non-appearance. In the absence of the wearer, the dress forms the only portrait that remains.”

Sylvia Batycka has an MFA Fine Art, Wimbledon College of Art, UAL, 2019. The Londoner by choice, she has lived and worked here from 2004, while originally comes from Kraków.
Sylvia has exhibited regularly for the last decade and most recently was the finalist of ING Discerning Eye 2020, as well as the finalist of The Young Contemporary Purchase Prize The Ingram Collection in 2019.

Making a Mark
‘Lines can detail, delineate, circumscribe, describe, define borders and distinguish between shadow and light. They allow our minds to understand the world: to analyse, categorise and contain what we see and experience. When we draw through our minds we can achieve abstract perfection.’
This extract from the essay ‘Making a mark’ by Richard Davey in Linda Karshan’s catalogue ‘Equilibro’ perfectly describes Hanna ten Doornkaat’s continued quest to provide new ideas about the meaning of drawing, challenging unconscious perceptions of form and space. All meanings and no meanings are possible.
She questions how boundaries of contemporary drawing can be pushed and asks questions about transitions between 2D and 3D.
Hanna holds an MA Sculpture from Wimbledon School of Art (2002). In 2015 her work was shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, London, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and Derwent Art Prize. In 2017 she was shortlisted again for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the ING Discerning Eye. In 2018 she had a solo exhibition ‘In the zero of form’ at One Paved Court, Richmond. In 2019 she exhibited in ‘Personal Structures’ at Palazzo Bembo, Venice , a collaboration between GAAF, a Dutch non-profit organisation and ECC (European Cultural Center) as part of the Venice biennale ,in a group show “[Un] Seen at Arthouse1, London as well as several other exhibitions in the UK, Germany, Australia, Canada, Belgium.
She has also curated major exhibitions such as ‘Selfies – Revisited’ at The Stables Gallery, Twickenham and more recently ‘White Noise’ and ‘Past and Present Tense’ at The Crypt Gallery, London, St.Pancras.
